Windflow's new gearbox test rig to be used for vibration analysis

Windflow's harmonic sound issues have now been narrowed down by scientific analysis.
At a board meeting yesterday the Windflow directors decided to carry out further testing of the Gebbies Pass prototype gearbox on a new purpose built test rig in the Auckland gearbox factory. This test rig has been built at a cost of more than $200,000 for the purpose of approval testing and running in of gearboxes manufactured during the ongoing building program. This is the first test facility of its kind in New Zealand and was designed and built by A.H. Gears Ltd New Zealand.
The test rig provides the ability to test run the gearbox under various load conditions and monitor the effects of a range of minor alterations to the gearbox componentry. "By combining this testing ability with our current advanced research into gear geometry and physics, we expect to essentially eliminate the problem vibration," states Windflow CEO Geoff Henderson. "The testing/modification program should be complete within a couple of months and the Stage 1 gearbox will then be re-installed in the windmill at Gebbies Pass and the new modifications incorporated into the stage 2 gearboxes."
"We are pleased to be able to announce this important step towards a complete resolution of the noise issue," said Mr Henderson. "At the same time we are pleased to report that in all other respects the windmill is performing well, especially the patented torque limiting gearbox. This gives us confidence to proceed with the Stage 2 build."
