Windflow Optimistic on Energy Talks
26 October 2007
Moves by leading energy providers Mighty River Power and Vector Ltd to explore development of wind powered generation with NZ Windfarms Ltd are a "breath of fresh air" in the energy debate, says Windflow Technology Ltd Chief Executive Geoff Henderson.
NZ Windfarms told NZX a fortnight ago that it is in discussion with Mighty River Power and Vector on ways in which they can work together on the development of distributed wind power generation.
"Windflow Technology is very encouraged by such an initiative, as hydro storage and wind power are a natural combination to help meet the Government's new target of 90% renewable electricity," said Mr Henderson. "Water can be stored in lakes when the wind is blowing and generating power, meaning more water is available for use when the wind is not blowing. The hydro lakes become like batteries which can be recharged when the wind is blowing".
NZ Windfarms has stated that the "potential association will
enable NZ Windfarms to enhance the scale of its development activities, and
resources available to us through a possible association with Mighty River
Power".
"As Windflow is a commercial supplier of wind turbines to NZ
Windfarms, the 50% co-developer of the Te Rere Hau windfarm, we are naturally
very optimistic that there will be opportunities for a close association with
such developments" said Mr Henderson. "We have supplied five of our Windflow 500
turbines for the Te Rere Hau wind farm, and hold confirmed orders for 44 further
turbines."
"The winds of change appear to be blowing very much in our favour right now, which is encouraging in terms of our development of a cohesive manufacturing base at Christchurch and growth strategy," said Mr Henderson. "Along with members of the energy community we look forward to helping New Zealand exceed its renewable electricity target".
