Fierce Storm Damages Windflow Prototype

The fierce storm that swept across the South Island yesterday has severely damaged Windflow Technology's prototype machine at Gebbies Pass. Staff were adjusting controls on the machine in strong winds when a sudden change in wind direction ripped the gearbox and main rotor assembly from its mountings. They then fell to the ground below the turbine.

Windflow's Chief Executive, Geoff Henderson said: "We are still assessing the damage to the machine, and are thankful that none of the staff on site were injured. I briefed the board by email last evening as I was on my way out to site to inspect the turbine and have spoken to Barrie Leay about it."

Windflow Chairman, Barrie Leay, said "Geoff and his team have our total support. Once the assessment is complete we will be refurbish the machine using parts that have been manufactured for the Te Rere Hau wind farm. At the same time we will identify the root cause of the accident to make any necessary adjustments to the control and protection system. We will also be talking with our insurers."
